Proverbs 6:10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,
Sitting in the yellow school bus, with my wife Wendy. Chatting with the volunteers and staff. It was around 7 am and we were stopping for breakfast. I was looking forwards to my first ever Bombay Burger. Some of the team jumped off the bus while we were pulled up under a massive bridge in the centre of Mumbai.
There were people everywhere, moving, selling, carrying. Constant noise and colour with the added harmony of tuk-tuk’s making their busy way around with a background chorus of a million car horns.
I love this place. I love the people. Love surges through me like a rolling wave, tears rise in my eyes as I am overcome with emotion.
The team are back and handing out hot street food. We sit in silence, enjoying this moment. Deep-fried battered chilli of a soft white roll. Words can’t do justice. It’s so cool to me that we can legit eat spicy food at 7 am for breakfast. I wonder sometimes if perhaps I was born in the wrong country.
Then we are done, wrappers gathered in and stored for disposal later. The bus engine roars into life with a billow of diesel smoke. We are heading to Dharavi, our third stop of the day. There we will feed many children as they line up with their steel plates and bowls. Some will fill the bus and have English and Arithmetic lessons for an hour and then be fed. There are several more stops to be made today.
I can’t believe that I get to do this.
KNOWLEDGE
What is the whisper you hear now and then, but always too busy? You push it away, stored with the forgotten dreams of days gone by. Narnia’s fallen tree.
You know there is more. Busyness fills your days.
Once the busyness is done you rest, justifying inaction with inertia. For a long time now you have not heard the whisper, you thought you would be happy when it left.
But you know there is more, there is something missing. A rapid to cross, a forest to break through, a cliff to scale and a castle to conquer.
Adventure is calling to you. Come away with me my lovely. Ah, there it is, you hear the whisper once more. Will you answer the call today?
UNDERSTANDING
Let’s pick one word from this verse to look closer at and see if that can help us gain a deeper insight into how God would love us to live?
The word for “little” in Hebrew is pronounced as “m’at” and is found 101 times in the Old Testament. In the ESV this word is translated into the English words, little; easily; small matter; few; some; almost; brink; almost; scarcely; and, not enough.
In this verse ten of chapter six, the word has the idea of the initial compromises at the wrong time, with the wrong attitude, that leads to the wrong outcome.
WISDOMÂ – what have you been putting off for too long now?
STRENGTHS THOUGHT: Restorative, loves mission impossible, solving unseen problems, and inspiring others.
Allan’s Unauthorised Version – [you so easily lie down, quickly become inactive and negligent, just a few idle moments you say, as you don’t care and give in.]
PRAYER: Father, thank you for today. Help me to stay aware of my condition before you and bring my best each day. Thank you.
