Today we will read II Kings 18:8  “He struck down the Philistines as far as Gaza and its territory, from watchtower to fortified city”.

The Philistines held the land to the west of Judah, along the Mediterranean coast and between Judah and Egypt. They frequently throughout history had started wars against Judah and held the southern tribes in degrading servitude many times.

Hezekiah, leading the armies of Judah, for the first time ever, entirely subdued them.

What a picture is being unfolded here.

It makes me think of the Israelites crossing into the promised land, Joshua is told by God three times to “be strong and courageous”. They had completed their time in the wilderness, and they were about to step into the promises of God.

The battles were just about to begin, as they took hold of God’s promises.

What does this mean for you and me today?

Well, we can realise that we have the authority under Jesus to step into all His promises.

We can choose to deal ruthlessly with everything within our influence that is a distraction from serving God, including cultural habits.

We choose not to focus on what God does for us, but rather who he is to us.

Now we are positioned, having won the private victory, to step into the public victory.

The battles are just about to start. But the foundations we have put in place will be spiritual granite.
