Prov 8:2 [ESV] On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand.

I have had such a wide range of bosses over the years. Ones who threw the phone across the room, ones who screamed in my face in front of the whole staff, ones who spoke quiet words of challenge and wisdom at unexpected moments, and ones that trusted me to get on and achieve the desired results. Many times in my sixty-six years I have had to remind myself that God is in control and that this person would have no authority over me unless He had allowed it. So my role on every occasion, was to ask myself. “what is coming to the surface in me. Allan?” And then follow that up with “and what do I need to hand over to God?”. It was rarely about the circumstances, but always about my heart. What an amazing God we serve hey?

KNOWLEDGE – Proverbs here speaks of a higher authority, one who stands at the crossroads and points to “the way”. It’s hard not to see Jesus here. This authority which is from the most extreme heights, beyond human sight and experience. I know that’s the wisdom I need, that’s the authority I want to come under and also as best as I can to carry.

UNDERSTANDING

Let’s pick one word from this verse to look closer at and see if that can help us gain a deeper insight into how God would love us to live?

The word use for “heights” here is pronounced as “ro’s” in Hebrew, and carries the meaning of the head of the body, or the very top of an object in status or authority even. It references leadership. The LXX reads For upon the [high extremities – υψηλών άκρων (uphelon akron)]

We find the word “akron” in the New Testament and it carries the meaning of the furthest bounds of heaven or earth – the highest, most extreme.

So when we read in Proverbs 8:2 the word “highest” we should not perhaps limit that to our understanding of “highest”?
