Prov 7:18 [ESV] Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us delight ourselves with love.
There are times in life when we give ourselves over to something, or someone, and it’s only with the benefit of hindsight that we come to our senses. In the moment, we are swept away by the passion, the possibilities, the potential.
I remember at eighteen years old being head-hunted to be the DJ at the hottest nightclub of the time in the city where I was living. It turned my head for sure. I started to build castles in the sky in my dreams.
I thought of the fun, the popularity, the influence, and the opportunities that this would present. Even in this embryonic stage people were coming out of the woodwork who wanted to become my advisors. It was late 1970’s and the music scene in the UK was world leading. Discos were packed at weekends and even busy on weeknights. They stayed open till 4 am. My life would involve sleeping during the day and starting work around 9pm. I was so pumped.
Then it collapsed, the investors pulled out, the deal fell through, and the company that were going to buy the nightclub building moved on to their next deal.
There was a trail of damage left behind, and my disappointment was only the smallest of issues. But today, I’m glad it fell through. With the wisdom of hindsight, this would have been a disaster for me at this age, with all my trauma still unprocessed.
KNOWLEDGE – There are some things in life that are not good to go through, but are good to have gone through. But, this is not one of them. Ideally we should flee from this type of situation. At the first inclination of temptation, turn and run for the hills. Nothing good will come from lingering, from drifting, from indecision.
UNDERSTANDING – Let’s pick one word from this verse to look closer at and see if that can help us gain a deeper insight into how God would love us to live?
In this short text two different words are used that are translated into “love’ in English. Firstly, “dod” – a term or romantic love, and secondly “‘ahab” something loved.
The LXX also distinguishes between these two words and reads as “Come! For we should enjoy friendship until dawn. Come for we should wrap up in passion.”
There is in these two different translations still the idea of giving oneself over completely into this situation, nothing held back.
WISDOM – I get to choose each day what I will give my life to, what values, what activities, what people, and what principles.
STRENGTHS THOUGHT: The talent of “Achiever” loves to commit to a course of action, to complete the task in front of it, to do it well, to finish strong, and to give all it has on the journey. Choosing wisely what we commit to can make a massive difference over the years.
Allan’s Unauthorised Version – Let me lead you on a journey and drink to our full satisfaction, drenched in romance, till the time of sacrifice let us enjoy one another with love.
Come, – let me lead you on a journey
let us take our fill – and drink to our full satisfaction, drenched
of love – of romance
till morning; – till the time of sacrifice
let us delight ourselves – let us enjoy one another
with love – with love.
PRAYER: Father, thank you for today. Help me to make great decisions about what I pour my energy, passion and skills into today.
