Proverbs 6:13 winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger,
My wife Wendy has Empathy as one of her top Gallup Strengths. It’s like a super-power to me. It’s intuitive and perceptive. It’s a gut feeling and it’s a science of observation. It brings comfort to those whom she meets that are in the middle of life storms, as they know that she knows what they are feeling, and in fact, she feels what they are feeling as she sits with them.
Ah, but beware the counterfeit, the schemer and the wriggler. You are seen. You will be undone if you try to make any of your secret signs around her, her family, or those she cares for.
For me, I will often meet people and not see any of what she sees. I will try to use great questions and then gauge responses to help me understand what are the deeper issues at play. But for Wendy, it’s seen and understood in real-time.
Wendy is right, time after time, that little niggling feeling has helped produce healing moments for others, it’s helped keep people safe from predators, and it help guide our family (esp me) when we were about to make a decision that would carry consequences.
So, if you are thinking about coming around our family with your winking, foot-shifting and pointing ways, you are warned – you will be identified quickly. I love my wife, she is amazing.
KNOWLEDGE
The whole idea of signalling with your feet speaks to secrecy and deviousness. This person is intentionally looking to take advantage of someone else, usually a vulnerable person that actually needs extra care. There is an indication of the heart in the movement of the feet.
In Ephesians 6:15 the feet get a mention, and again its to do with their direction and purpose as linked to our heart.
“and as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”
Again we see intent, direction and purpose, but this time we are living with the intention to help and bless others at every opportunity.
The progression of the actions of the man of Proverbs 6:13 is interesting, the eye sees, the feet move, the hand does. It whispers to Psalms 1:1 – where that man walks, stand, and then sits. There is a progression of entrapment, both for the perpetrator and the victim.
This scripture has me evaluating my heart this morning, what is the intention of my heart and how do they work out in actions?
UNDERSTANDING
Let’s pick one word from this verse to look closer at and see if that can help us gain a deeper insight into how God would love us to live?
The word for “signals” in Hebrew is pronounced as “mala” and appears 5 times in the Old Testament. The English translation for this word in the ESV is, said; say; speak; utter, and signals.
So we pick up the idea that everything about this word is to do with communication – this persons body language gives him away.
WISDOMÂ – what does your body signals tell people about your life?
STRENGTHS THOUGHT: Focus, single-mindedly pursues its’ goals, bringing others into their long term aims.
Allan’s Unauthorised Version – [maliciously winks at sin, proclaims his intentions with his feet, and points like an archer with his finger.]
PRAYER: Father, thank you for today. Help me to
