Etymology – ashamed – from Old English asceamed – feeling shame, filled with shame.
These scriptures point to an interesting and motivational truth: when we are yielded to Christ and in a relationship with him, there is no shame. Shame is a conscious and painful feeling of humiliation to our whole being – where we think our activity informs our identity and is therefore different from guilt which is connected to the idea that someone has consciously committed an offence.
Reflections
It’s such an uncomfortable experience the feeling of being ashamed. It will rob us of our joy, our peace, and our purpose. There is an antidote. His name is Jesus, he says that he took all our shame on himself, our shame over our sinfulness. Romans 10:11 [ESV] For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame”. Joel 2:26 [ESV] “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.
While we may experience a sense of conviction around our actions and a desire to repent and change, we will never need to wear the clothes of shame – Jesus took these for us and in their place he provided his garments of praise and righteousness.
Strength Coaches comment – Belief as a talent carries strong core values – values that can support valuing self and others while dispelling untruths and myths that cause confusion and even shame.
