εντολάς (entolas) – commandments.
: ἐντολή (entole) – commandment, order, instruction. It is mentioned 67 times in the New Testament and translated as “commandment/s” every single time. The New testament has a lot to say about both keeping the commandments of the Lord, and also of the new commandments that Jesus brought. In John 13:34 [ESV} A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
God gave ten commandments to Moses and the people of Israel in the desert io Exodus 20, and here thousands of years later, God is bringing this one new commandment, and ensuring that it will be communicated across all the earth in the centuries that follow.
Reflections
While the original ten commandments were given by a mysterious God to one man, and then imparted to a nation, this new commandment is provided by God in the flesh to a group of men who were charged with taking His message to the ends of the earth. It’s a relational message about what we should do, not an instructional message about what we should not do. The only way possible for anyone to keep this new commandment is by having a living relationship with Jesus, and first receiving this unconditional love from Him, so that then as it flows to us, it can flow through us. It can never be about my human love as that will never be enough on its own.
