Prov 8:22 [ESV] The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.

One of the first things that happened to me when I met with Jesus and he saved me, is that I no longer needed drugs or alcohol – years and years of addiction and abuse were wiped out in a millisecond as Jesus reclaimed the territory of my heart – an area I had wrestled with and really surrendered to self and Satan for  many years. I can think of many occasions over those years where I had “tried to be a better person”, but it was something put on from the outside, a modification, a refinement, an adjustment.

God knew me since before I was even born, and knows me as I head into eternity – and He knows this right now. All I know is right now and some of my remembered past.

He wants you to know Him, He wants this so much that He sent His only Son to die, just for you, to pay for all that’s wrong on the inside, and to come and help you be restored to the makers intended condition.

It’s an ongoing work as I can attest to, thirty-six years later, God is still working on my inner person, bringing changes that set me free more and more to be all that He always intended me to me. What’s your experience? What’s your hope? What’s your plan?

KNOWLEDGE – There is a depth to this scripture, written by Solomon thousands of years ago. Here he is recognising that God knew him since the very beginning – taking us back to Genesis – where God establishes that (Gen 1:26) man will be made in his own image, and that “man” would bruise the head of the serpent (Gen 3:15) – the word for bruise means “to crush”.

UNDERSTANDING

Let’s pick one word from this verse to look closer at and see if that can help us gain a deeper insight into how God would love us to live?

The word used for “possessed” here is pronounced as “qanah” in Hebrew and carries the meaning of – to buy, acquire, get, and to be bought”. The LXX reads as “The Lord created me (the) head of his ways for his works.”. So the word for possessed is translated to “created” – έκτισέ [ektise] – used fifteen times in The Nnew Testament – always with the root meaning attached to “create”.
